4 Things to Know About Dental Bonding

Everyone wants to have a nice smile. However, many people have imperfections that interfere with confidence. dental bonding is a procedure that can help fix several issues, and it is relatively non-invasive. There are a variety of methods that can improve smiles, and it is good to have a better understanding of each one.

What to know about dental bonding

Dental bonding is a procedure in which the dentist applies a tooth-colored material to the front of the teeth. It is bonded to the teeth with a UV laser. The bonding material can also be used as an alternative to metal fillings.

1. It can cover up certain imperfections

Bonding is used for a variety of reasons, often to improve someone's appearance. It can improve the structure of a tooth by covering up chips or cracks. It can change the shape of the teeth and cover up small gaps in between teeth. It can also cover up stains, especially those that regular whitening procedures cannot completely get rid of.

2. The procedure is relatively quick

Some dental procedures that improve the look of teeth and gums require multiple visits. Some even require months to complete. Dental bonding is popular because the procedure only takes one visit. Also, unlike some procedures, the structure of the tooth does not need to be altered.

Rather than removing a lot of the enamel, the dentist only needs to scrape away a little to bond the material to the teeth. The entire procedure generally takes between 30 and 60 minutes, depending on how many teeth are affected.

3. Dental habits can affect its lifespan

The bonding material is not as strong as natural teeth, so people do need to be aware of how they care for and treat them. Bonded teeth can be cleaned and flossed just like regular teeth. However, certain things should be avoided. This includes biting down on hard foods such as brittle and hard candies. Bad habits, such chewing on as ice, pens, or other hard objects, also need to stop, as they can easily break the material.

Bonded teeth stain more easily than natural ones. Wearers should limit dark beverages such as red wine, coffee, and tea. Staining foods, such as beets and dark berries, should also be enjoyed infrequently. Smoking is detrimental to the bonding material and can significantly shorten its lifespan.

4. You may need to replace them

Although certain habits can result in the staining and breakage of dental bonding, even caring for them perfectly does not mean the teeth will last forever. The average lifespan of bonded teeth is three to ten years, in which you would need to replace them. Bad habits mean you may have to retouch or replace them more frequently.

Conclusion

If someone wants to improve dental imperfections, dental bonding may be a good choice. It is an easy procedure that results in natural-looking teeth and a nice smile.
